It is commonly consumed and is obtained through the fermentation of various food particles (e.g. potato, molasses, grains, fruit juices) by organisms like yeast and some fungi. It is the drug found in beer, wine, liquor and in certain other beverages.

The stage where an individual tends to continue excessive or compulsive use of alcoholic drinks and becomes an addict to alcohol is called Alcoholism. It impairs psychological, physiological and socio-economic conditions of the addict. Therefore, alcoholic addiction is considered a sort of disease. Alcohol abuse is not alcoholism but people who abuse alcohol negatively affect themselves and their close ones because of their drinking.

Causes of Alcoholism
  • A genetically inherited predisposition for alcoholism
  • As a part of religious or social traditions
  • Relief from pain
  • Social pressure
  • Depression, Anxiety, Stress, etc.
  • Curiosity
  • Desire of excitements

Symptoms of Alcoholism
  • Visual problems like blurred vision, double vision and improper of distance.
  • Feeling of relaxation and warmth.
  • Decreased reaction time, Lack of judgment.
  • Increases the blood pressure and lowers the sugar level.
  • In women, it particularly affects the ovulation and menstrual cycle.

Effects of Alcoholic drink

  • It causes anesthetic effect on nervous system.
  • Prolonged, heavy use of alcohol causes increased secretion of gastric juices that cause inflammation of gastric mucosa leading to gastritis.
  • It can lead to permanent damage to vital organs viz, the brain and lives.
  • It lowers the blood sugar level.
  • It interferes the normal functions of nephrons of kidney.
  • Alcoholic fats are deposited on the walls of the blood vessels and thus increase the blood pressure and adversely affect the functions of heart.
  • Infants of the women who drink during pregnancy may suffer from Fetal Alcohol Syndromes (FAS), causing physical and mental disabilities.

2. Effects on family
  • Loss of money spends on expensive alcohol leading to economic crisis or poverty.
  • Alcoholism causes domestic problems including divorce.
  • Children suffer from frustration, anxiety and insecurity.
  • The prestige of the family will decrease.
3. Effects on community
  • Increase in road and industrial accidents, crimes like corruption, rapes etc.
  • Loss of social reputations and personality.
  • Loss of manpower due to injuries from falls, fights, burns and immature death.

Control of Alcoholism
  • Early detection and proper treatment of sick persons.
  • Productions and selling of alcohol should be prohibited.
  • Strictly implementation of law against anti-social elements and activities.
  • Providing school education, community and health education.
  • Rehabilitation.
  • Psychological treatments.

According to recent data, about 750,000 teens are alcoholic. Moreover, more than 200,000 people die of alcohol related diseases each year. So,
