Drug is defined as any chemical substance that alters the physiological state of a living organism. It is any substance that when taken into living organism, may modify one or more of its functions. So drugs are widely used in medicine for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease. They include analgesics, antibiotics, anesthetics, antihistamines and anticoagulants. Those substances work on the nervous system and act either as stimulants to excite it or as depressants which slow down the activity of brain. Some may act as sedative and other cause hallucination.Drug abuse indicates the misuse of drugs. It may be defined as the use of any substance in an illegal and un-medical way that alters the ability of the individual. Self-administration of a drug for non-medical reasons, in quantities and frequencies which may impair with individuals ability to function effectively and which may result in social, physical or emotional harm.
Drug Addiction:
Drugs belonging to the third category are often used by the persons regularly. Their body becomes accustomed to them and may even become dependent. The addicts then feel an intense urge for them, and are physically ill and distressed when deprived of them. Prolonged use of such drugs may lead to the dependence of the body on them. This condition of feeling compelled to take certain drugs is known as drug addiction.
Causes of Drug Addiction
1. A person may experiment because his or her friends suggest it.
2. To satisfy his own curiosity.
3. For the feeling of relaxation.
4. In search of a more satisfying life.
5. To escape from a difficult or unpleasant situation.
6. To increase their working capacity.
7. Students usually take drugs to study all night during examination.
Control measures for Drug Addiction
1. Treatment and hospitalization of sick or addict persons
2. Rehabilitation for the addict persons
3. Psychological treatment
4. Banning of illegal activities like production and selling of drugs that increase anti-social activities. Smuggling of drugs should be prohibited.
5. Enforcement of laws, rules and regulations for the control and supply of drugs.
6. The youth should be motivated to be involved in the fight against drug abuse.
