Solar energy and its application
The most common and important source of energy of the world is the solar energy. The solar energy from the sun reaches the earth in the form of electromagnetic energy. Some energy falls in the form of light and the remaining part in the form of heat. The solar energy falling on the earth surface performs various functions. The solar energy is the ultimate source of all types of energy.
Applications:
The solar energy is used as heat and light energy.
It is used in drying harvested crops.
It is used in preserving foods by drying them. For example:various crops, grains and meat are dried on sun before preserving.
It is used for transportation like solar tempo.
It powers the flow of wind.
Some solar devices:
Solar cooker
The solar cooker is the device which is used for cooking food. It consists of large reflector called solar trough. The reflector is the plane mirror which reflects the solar energy incident on it to a metal container (cooker). The metal container is placed in a metal box and covered with a glass sheet. The inner walls of the metal box are painted black and it is placed in a wooden box. The outer surface of the container is also painted black. When solar radiation falls on the reflector it is reflected to the container in the form of a strong beam of solar radiation. Due to the strong heat beam, the food kept in the container is cooked. Such solar cooker can heat the food upto 140 degree celsius.
Solar cell
The solar is the device which converts the solar energy into the electrical energy. It consists of an arrangement of the semiconductor device called diode which create potential difference across it when solar energy falls on it. Each diode is called a solar cell and an array of such cells is called a solar battery. The output potential difference from the solar battery is connected to a chargeable battery which is charged by it. The obtained emf from the battery can be used to drive any electrical device. It is mostly used to light houses, to operate electronic devices like watch, calculator, etc.
Solar heater
In a solar heater, the solar radiation is reflected into a black pipe containing water by means of a plane reflector. When the solar radiation falls on the plane reflector, it reflects the solar radiation into the black pipe which absorbs the heat and uses it for heating the water in it. It is mostly used to heat water for domestic purposes.
